An increasingly popular gift idea is to give a donation on behalf of the receiver to their favorite charity or organization. Donors can even encourage their social networks to donate, by sharing the news of their charitable gift on Facebook or Twitter from a number of websites.

Heifer International provides livestock and Earth-friendly agricultural training to poor families around the world. Your $20 contribution could provide products like wool, eggs, milk and meat to a family — to feed a family and to help them earn a sustainable income. Heifer projects are long-term investments in the future of people and the planet.

Premiering this 2012 season, Heifer International is offering new gifts like biogas stoves, clean water, and the gift of education for a young girl in need. Also new, you can provide a family with a package of bees, the box and hive plus training in beekeeping. As bees search for nectar, they pollinate plants. Placed strategically, beehives can as much as double some fruit and vegetable production. Not only do bees supply honey for consumption and added income for participants, they pollinate a wide area around their hives, improving the environment.

You can print out the gift card yourself and present it to your recipient. Your gift in their name is bound to bring a smile. Just knowing that the gift in their honor is helping sustain a family gives lasting contentment.

Outreach International is another organization that provides sustainable contributions for such things as clean drinking water, girls’ education, childhood survival, and food security. Outreach International is a Better Business Bureau accredited charity, and has been highly rated by Charity Navigator, which is one of the most trusted rating systems in the country.

Make a donation to Outreach International in the name of a friend or loved one. Outreach International will send a card of acknowledgment and the honoree’s name will appear in an upcoming issue of Outreach Developments newsletter.
